How does it feel to live in Hong Kong?

“Convenient”. That’s the answer I've heard most of the times from other interns and foreigners. Most of them are here for a year or two and still are willing to stay as long as possible.

But that’s still not my case. It’s been nearly 3 week of my residential stay in this place and so far I honestly don’t have many warm feelings to this place. Neither bad. But it’s still not my place and just a simple idea of whole year stay doesn't please me much. Anyways, I just need to give some time for it.
But Hong Kong is a very interesting place. The original translation of Hong Kong is “Fragrant harbour” which might refer to “the harbour waters sweetened by the fresh water estuarine influx of the Pearl River, or to the incense from factories lining the coast to the north of Kowloon, which was stored around Aberdeen Harbour for export before the development of "Victoria Harbour” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hong_Kong). The official name of the city is ‘Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China’, but both “Hong Kong Special Administrative Region" and "Hong Kong" are also accepted.

One city with such a wide diversity and  it’s strangely double cultural face is represented as “Asia’s World City” where “East meets West”. It takes me just a half an hour of travel time from home to city center to assure it.

A 1,104 km² area is a home for seven million people and, probably, another million of tourists, temporary visitors, interns and new residents. Density of 6,480 inhabitants per square kilometer lists Hong Kong in 4th place as one of most populated places in the world, after Macau (20,069 pop./km²), Monaco (18,068 pop./km²) and Singapore (7,543  pop./km²). In comparison, Lithuania is in 164th place (45 pop./km²), Sri Lanka - 42nd (309 pop./km²) and Sweden - 192nd (23 pop./km²) (source: http://esa.un.org/wpp/Excel-Data/population.htm)

As being so highly populated, Hong Kong transports the highest number of population in world - around 90 % of all inhabitants by daily public transport which is extremely convenient, clever and well organized. The remains of British colonial times - left side traffic system.
From point A to point B you can get in various ways, starting with simple walking, taking red Toyota cab, British style double floor bus, mini bus, train, metro, also double floor tram or ferry. In order to reach some special points and sightseeing places it is possible to use electro cab or peak tram for Victoria’s peak. All is merged into one system for passengers welfare and it’s enough to buy one pre-paid ‘Octopus’ card and use for transportation and top it up when needed. The card is also accepted in various convenience stores such as ‘7-Eleven’, student canteens and etc.

According to estimates from both UN and WHO, Hong Kong had the longest life expectancy of any region in the world in 2012. Hong Kong also has the highest average IQ score in 81 countries around the world. This factor, the name if  one of the world's leading international Financial centers, low taxation and free trade attracts many foreigners and makes it one of the fastest cities. But I decided to take it slow and experience it little by little. Anyways, One year long internship just began.
