Sunday hikes

They are the reason for our good mood and energy.

Me, Zhenia, Tuyana and Maurus. A group which meets every Sunday for a hike in Hong Kong. We have already visited many breathtaking places and discovered this city from completely different but yet very pleasant side.

I won't try to explain much, because those pictures speak more then I would ever be able to say.

And we just enjoy it!

Dragon's Back route

Hong Kong is remarkable because you can step from busy urban areas into peaceful countryside in less than an hour. That's particularly true for the Dragon's Back trail which Time Magazine declared as the Best Urban Hike in Asia (22 Nov 2004 Asia Issue). The trail is "the city's finest and most surprising ramble", the Time article says. "The glory of it all is that you're so close to the city, but could hardly feel farther away."

Monkey Hill

Monkey Hill (a.k.a. Kam Shan) is located between Shatin and Sham Shui Po. Walking along Golden Hill Road, in between Shek Lei Pui Reservoir and Kownloon Reservoir, you can see lots of macaque monkeys running on the road, trees, bus stops, dams, trash cans, and chasing, fighting and mating with each other.

There are about 2100 macaque monkeys in Hong Kong, about 1,800 of them in Kam Shan Country Park.

Cheung Chau

Small it may be, but the island of Cheung Chau packs a powerful punch when it comes to good times. Aside from its annual explosion of Bun Festival fun, Cheung Chau’s temples, seafood restaurants, beaches – and even a pirate’s hideout – bring pleasure all year round.

Kowloon walled city park

Kowloon Walled City Park sits on the very site of the former Kowloon Walled City, remembered today as a haven of crime and debauchery.

It wasn't a hike, rather another discovery about Hong Kong. Still, Sunday tradition was kept.

Tai tam

With the onset of prime hiking season, here’s a good trail with great views and mixed terrain that keeps it relatively easy going for a decent Sunday stroll. Head up beyond the reservoir on Wong Nai Chung Gap Road to the trailhead in the shadows of the Parkview towers then make for the woods along the country trail on the south side of the road. The route backtracks the Wilson Stage 1 trail over Violet Hill, and with the current clean crisp weather offers views toward Kowloon and down to Repulse Bay ahead. The Japanese used Violet Hill during the Battle of Hong Kong to bombard Aberdeen with field gun fire from above.

Sai Kung

Tai Long \wan hike route covers part of Section 2 of the MacLehose Trail, where you’ll be treated to views of scenic coastline, mangroves and a chain of some of the most beautiful beaches in Hong Kong. Tai Long Wan literally translates as ‘Big Wave Bay’, and it has four spectacular beaches, each gazing upon the Pacific Ocean to the east. White sands and emerald waters are tempting diversions here for hikers in need of a refreshing dip.

One of those rare pictures when all 4 of us are together in one picture. Usually Maurus is acting as our photographer.
